Where Lorem Ipsum came from
Lorem Ipsum is not random gibberish. It is a scrambled excerpt from De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (“On the Ends of Good and Evil”), a philosophical work written by the Roman statesman Cicero in 45 BC.
The original passage reads: “Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit...” — meaning “Nor is there anyone who loves, pursues, or desires pain itself because it is pain...” The familiar “lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” opening is the middle of a longer sentence, with words altered and rearranged to make the Latin nonsensical.
The text entered design history in the 1960s when Letraset — a company that made dry-transfer lettering sheets for designers — used it as placeholder text on their sample sheets. When desktop publishing software appeared in the 1980s, Aldus PageMaker included the same Lorem Ipsum text as its default placeholder. From there it became the industry default, and it has stayed that way ever since.

Why designers use placeholder text
The purpose of Lorem Ipsum is to let the visual design be evaluated without interference from the actual words. Human brains are wired to read. When a design mockup uses real text, reviewers focus on the words instead of the layout, typography, and spacing.
Placeholder text short-circuits that instinct. Because Lorem Ipsum is Latin-derived but grammatically scrambled, English speakers recognize it as text without being able to read it. The eye evaluates rhythm, density, and visual flow instead.
Typography testing
Different typefaces handle letter combinations differently. A paragraph of Lorem Ipsum reveals how a font handles long text — letter spacing, line height, and legibility — without any specific words influencing the perception.
Layout and spacing
A headline with real text pulls attention and editorial opinions. A placeholder headline lets reviewers focus on whether the grid, whitespace, and hierarchy work.
Content-agnostic design

Lorem Ipsum is a tool for a specific phase of work. There are situations where it creates problems rather than solving them:

Clients and stakeholders sometimes cannot evaluate a design when they see Latin placeholder text — it distracts or signals unfinished work. In these contexts, real headlines and realistic paragraph text often land better.
Accessibility and localisation testing
Lorem Ipsum does not reveal how your layout handles long German compound words, right-to-left Arabic text, or CJK (Chinese-Japanese-Korean) characters. Use actual text from target languages for these tests.
Designs that ship with placeholder text accidentally
It happens more than you would think. If real content is not available, establish a process for swapping placeholder text before anything goes to production.
Content-first design
Some designers and teams deliberately work with real content from the start, arguing that design decisions should be driven by actual words and lengths. If your team follows this approach, Lorem Ipsum has no role.

Several alternatives to classic Lorem Ipsum exist for contexts where you want placeholder text that reads more naturally or is thematically appropriate:
